Alex's research interests lie within foundational and applied fluvial geomorphology, and include: measurement and modelling of land use management, climate change and biotic impacts on sediment dynamics in river systems; bank erosion; instrumentation and data acquisition in aquatic and terrestrial environments; and sustainable flood risk management.

He is currently working on a Leverhulme Trust-funded project entitled “Biogeomorphology of riparian systems: Space, time and new information sources”. The research utilises remotely-sensed data (aerial photos, multi-spectral imagery, LiDAR) to investigate the consequences of two-way interactions between river processes and riparian trees, and the evolution of these interactions through time, across large areas. The project focuses on the River Tagliamento, Italy, a morphologically-intact system where river flows, sediment transport and riparian trees interact across a range of climatic and hydrological conditions in an essentially unmanaged setting.
